Podcast Episode 407: From Helpless to Heard: How Schools Can Now Take on Instagram Drama with Tara Hopkins

Remember when schools used to say, “Sorry, we can’t do anything about what happens on Instagram”? Meanwhile, kids were getting cyberbullied in group chats, called out in comments, and left with nowhere to turn. Parents felt powerless, and schools shrugged it off.

That excuse is gone.

Instagram has rolled out a brand-new program giving middle and high schools a direct line to report harmful content or accounts—and see Instagram take action. It’s a huge shift that means schools no longer have to sit on the sidelines while online bullying spills into classrooms and hallways.

To break it all down, we sat down with Tara Hopkins, Instagram’s Global Director of Policy (and mom of two teens), who’s at the forefront of creating these safety measures. She explains how this tool works, why it matters, and what parents can expect moving forward.

If you’ve ever worried about what your kids are facing online—or rolled your eyes when schools said “our hands are tied”—this is the conversation you need to hear. And if it hits home, share it with another parent who’s navigating the same challenges.

In this episode of the No Guilt Mom podcast you’ll learn:

  • Why screen time panic misses the bigger picture
  • The 3 things parents should worry about most with their teens online
  • What happens when predators try to DM kids
  • A new program Instagram is launching that will change how every high schooler that fights cyberbullying
