5 Items You Can Toss Out of Your Closet Today

Fantastic tips to get started creating a small wardrobe. If you have been putting it off, this article will help you start the process! You can get rid of these five types of clothing immediately!

Clothes that hold an emotional attachment but never wear

I have clothes like this. My senior year high school t-shirt with the names of my entire graduating class on it. My first marathon race shirt. I don’t get rid of these. But, I also don’t keep them in my closet.

I remove these clothing items from the hangers and put these in special place with the rest of my mementos. I want to keep them, but I don’t need them taking up valuable real estate.

Find a place to store all of your clothing mementos.

Clothes that were really expensive, you never wear, but you hold onto anyway because you feel guilty giving them up

You spent a lot of money on one shirt, but every time you put it on, it just never looks right and you place it back on the hanger. It’s ok. I’ve been there.

If the shirt shows no visible signs of wear it is perfect for resale. Sell it at a consignment shop or through a Facebook group online. Get money from it that you can use to buy something up love. The shirt is of no use to you hanging in your closet.

No need to feel guilty. Sell the items you never wear and you can move on.

Clothes you haven’t worn in the last month

Small wardrobes only contain clothes you absolutely love. You wear these clothes again and again because they make you feel good and you always receive a ton of compliments whenever you put them on.

You probably already have a small wardrobe lurking in your mountain of items. The best way to find all these clothes is to empty out your entire closet. Take everything out.

Separate your clothes into four piles: Love It, Ok, Hate it and Seasonal. The clothes in your “Hate It” pile are easy. Donate them. If you can’t stand to be rid of them, put them all in garbage bags and place them (tied) in the trunk of your car.

After a few days, You will probably not even remember what is in that bag and then feel no remorse about dumping them at the nearest Goodwill.

Those clothes in your “OK” pile are the ones that you need to dig through. This pile holds the real struggle in creating a smaller closet. They hold the emotion. They hold the guilt, the “only ifs”, the clothes you would be so much happier without.

Take a critical look at the clothes you haven’t worn in the past month. Do they make you feel good? Do you get compliments when you wear them?

If the answer is no, they do not belong in your closet. Now is the time to start grieving their loss. For these clothes I poured my self a glass of wine, took a deep breath and piled them into garbage bags.

I have never regretted getting rid of these five types of clothing. Sometimes, I create an outfit and I’ll think, “if only I had that black shirt.” But, that feeling disappears quickly. I always find another item to use instead. And I can locate that other item fast because I’m not digging through an avalanche of clothes.
